Buffalo Bill Wild West Show
Buffalo Bill on an Appaloosa Horse
Otto Eerelman
London, Barnum & Bailey circus, 1883
Original Watercolor on strong paper, laid down on fine cardboard, by Otto Eerelman , at the encampment at the Wild West show in London, England in 1883 at the Barnum and Bailey Circus, showing Buffalo Bill on an Appaloosa horse during the encampment and enactment.
Otto Eerelman (1839-1929 was a Dutch artist born in the Dutch city of Groningen in 1839, where he studied with the Dutch history painter J.H. Egenberger at the Minerva Academy. He later studied and worked in Paris in 1867. He returned to Groningen from 1867 until 1874 to teach at the Minerva Academy. He then decided to fully focus on painting and moved to Brussels (1874) and The Hague (1875-1902). With a stop in Arnhem he finally returned to Groningen, as a famous artist. Although widely reputed for his paintings of the royal family, particularly Queen Wilhelmina, Eerelman was primarily known for his detailed renderings of horses and dogs. He is considered the top painter of horse scenes in the Netherlands in the 19th century.
This watercolor painting by Eerelman represents an important contribution to western American art from a prospective of a European artist. Eerelman, like Georg Catlin and Carl Bodmer, spent time with the Mandan Indians on the Missouri River, USA. The painting depicts the encampment of the legendary Wild West show in London in 1883. It shows Buffalo Bill (William F. Cody) on an Appaloosa horse waiting for his enactment during the show at the Barnum & Bailey circus in London, England, in 1883.
An other similar watercolor painting of this series by Otto Eerelman is exhibited at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum in Cody, Wyoming, USA.

Original water color painting on paper of the coast of Dover, England
Artist: James Pattison Cockburn , c. 1842
In original frame, fine condition
The painting shows the Artist while sitting for the scene with family members on the coast near Dover. A pencil note on the back of the sheet explains: “Shakespeare’s Cliff, Dover, Jas. Cockburn”. This painting was executed probably at a family leisure trip to the channel coast. It depicts the chalk cliffs, the beach of the channel coast with fishing boats, people on the beach and a storm clouded sky. What is historically of high interest is the work on the scaffold survey of the rail road tracks just to be build. The cliff is still untouched for the blasting of the rail road tunnel a bit later executed.
This is a wonderful time document painted by a renowned English Army officer and painter. Cockburn’s work on the Canadian Frontier, especially his watercolors of early Quebec City and the Niagara area are outstanding historical documents. He painted also English country site, his documentations of his travels to Switzerland and Italy are also much sought for by institutions and collectors.
